Thanks for the birthday present, Backwoods

I got a postcard in the mail yesterday from Backwoods. First I thought it was a notice about a sale coming up or something. I usually don’t pay much attention to mail like that, honestly. As it turns out, my birthday is this coming Monday, and the postcard was for a free gift! An Osprey Halo LE Daypack valued at $49. I don’t know about you, but I think that is a pretty awesome birthday present. And great timing because Sarah and I are planning to make an “outdoors day” out of my birthday – hiking and kayaking are involved.

Latest trip to the library

My trip to the library today brought home the following:
★ Quantum of Solace by Ian Fleming (mp3 audio)
★ Lord of the Flies by William Golding
★ The Firm by John Grisham
★ The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss (mp3 audio)
★ Switch by Chip Heath & Dan Heath
★ The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell
★ Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell

I know I probably will not read all these books by the time they are
due on April 6th, or even in the next month if I renew some of them.
But, I do want to read more and plan to schedule time in my days and
nights to read – if I don’t plan for it, then it doesn’t happen.

My wife and I have good taste

I decided to browse Overstock.com the other day just to see what kind of selection of bar stools they had. I came across a really great set of 30-inch metal stools that actually came in a set of 2. I was so tempted to buy them immediately, but did my best to resist the child within, I waited and decided that I would just show Sarah, hoping that she would like them as much as I.

The next morning, I was still thinking about the barstools. So I mentioned to Sarah: “Hey, I saw these barstools on Overstock last night…”
I began describing them to her, and she told me about some that she saw also saw on a blog recently. As we were describing our finds to each other, they began to sound a lot alike. So, she got online and found the ones that she had seen. Lo and behold, they were indeed the same:

I love that we found the same thing in a completely different place and both really liked it – to the extent of wanting it pretty badly. I don’t know if we’ll end up purchasing, but I like the story nevertheless.

Maybe I’ll start running barefoot on the treadmill

Humans are excellent two-legged walkers. It’s one of the things that make us such successful creatures.

And there are some scientists who say we’re naturally born runners as well, that our bodies evolved to run. Now, anthropologist Dan Lieberman, one of the proponents of the “human runner” school, concludes that we do it better without shoes.

Three Reasons the iPad Won’t Kill Amazon’s Kindle

Also, there’s the distraction factor. When you read a book, you just don’t want to have e-mail, Twitter and the ESPN Web site beckoning from the browser. The absence of those services on the Kindle — sure, it’s also a flaw — actually make it better for focused leisure reading.

This is what I was saying earlier. Totally agree.
